FAQ: Versions and Costs

If you plan to use the book for your course, here are some answers to some common questions.

Downloaded versions of the text are, of course, always free. You might be advised to save a copy locally, just as a precaution.

A softcover physical copy of the book is available at Lulu.com for $29.70 (as of 2011/11/30). Due to page limits on bindings, the Waldron Edition (Version 2.00 content) is a relatively complete subset of the content, though the Archetypes have been split out into a slim workbook ($8.90). When I have taught out of the print-on-demand version, I have emailed my students a few weeks before the semester begins with instructions on ordering, since manufacturing and delivery takes about 10 days without paying extra rush charges.

I prefer to teach out of the very latest edition so I can track typos and changes, so I arrange a group purchase for my students at a copy shop. In a quantity of about 30 copies, the price for a double-sided loose-leaf version is about comparable to the Lulu.com price. It would appear that without a quantity discount, a purchase of a single copy is about double that. If you know TeX it should be easy to download the source and comment-out unwanted sections and make a custom edition for your own use. Or you can use a tool like pdftk to take a subset of one of the PDFs made available here. I try to release a fairly stable and error-free version right before the start of the fall and spring semesters. These have version numbers that end in a "0" (.10, .20, etc).
